Matt Maher, “What a Friend”

Contemporary Chrsitian singer Matt Maher has released “What a Friend,” which is counter-intuitive to what I expected from that title! Expecting a hymn, I instead got a rollicking praise anthem–WHAT?! Yeah! “What a Friend,” penned by Maher with Adam Palmer, MAtthew Hein, and Abbie Parker, brings together what sounds like a Hammond B3, a gospel choir, and a frantic tempo for a home run single across the board. Great track from his new album, “Echoes.”

WHAT A FRIEND Lyrics
Matt Maher

Everybody has trials and temptations
Everybody knows heart break, isolation
But we can lay our burdens down (our burdens down)
Lay our burdens down

What a friend we have in Jesus
East to west my sins are gone
I see grace on every horizon
And forever and ever His heart is my home

Everybody has fears, everybody got worries
Everybody knows sorrow, devastation
But we can lay our burdens down (our burdens down)
Lay our burdens down

What a friend we have in Jesus
East to west my sins are gone
I see grace on every horizon
And forever and ever His heart is my home

No more betrayal, for He is faithful
He fills me up and my cup runneth over
No more betrayal, for He is faithful
How He has proven it over and over
No more betrayal, for He is faithful
He fills me up and my cup runneth over
No more betrayal, for He is faithful
How He has proven it over and over
Over and over

What a friend we have in Jesus
East to west my sins are gone
I see grace on every horizon
And forever and ever His heart is my home
What a friend we have in Jesus
East to west my sins are gone, yeah
I see grace on every horizon
And forever and ever His heart is my home
Forever and ever His heart is my home
