Michelle Williams, formerly of 90s super girl group Destiny’s Child, has released Say Yes as the carrier single of her upcoming gospel release, Journey to Freedom, her fourth release and most highly anticipated, thanks in great part to the appearance of her former Destiny’s Child groupmates Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Kelly Rowland.
Superstar cameos aside, Say Yes is an absolute winner. Taking a page from the Nigerian gospel song of the same title, Say Yes adds a potent club beat, some frantic hand clapping, and that African-born gospel passion, and comes out a winner in every sense of the word. Williams delivers quite the vocal performance, after years of honing her craft on the stage since Destiny’s Child’s disbandment. 
Her voice is now confident and strong, a far cry from her first few years with the girl group, hiding in the shadow of two vocalists more gifted and seasoned than she, and her passion for Jesus is strong and evident. I’ve watched live performances of Say Yes, and they’re spot-on, even without Rowland and Knowles-Carter. Williams takes that stage, interspersing scripture with her encouragement, and sends the churches into a hand-clapping frenzy. What a spirit!
The proof is in the pudding: in only its fourth week, Say Yes topped the Billboard Gospel Songs chart. It’s on its second week at number one this week, and time will tell if Say Yes stands to become a classic in gospel music. I certainly am enjoying this one all the way. Well-done, Michelle.
