K-Pop girl group Secret has come back after concluding promotions for Poison. The new track, Talk That, is a product of a collaboration with producer Shinsadong Tiger, who worked with Hyosung, Jieun, Zinger, and Sunhwa for Magic a few years back.
Honestly, I love this track! Talk That breaks the mold of several of Secret’s Korea singles, and that’s awesome. A typical Secret carrier single is an all-out brassy pop-rock anthem (Magic, Madonna, Love is Move, and most recently, Poison), so now that we get this sexy, sultry track that showcases the girls’ vocals more than ever before, we’re just so excited.
Shinsadong Tiger really shakes things up a bit with Talk That. For one thing, we knew Zinger could sing – her take in the group’s Japanese single, So Much For Goodbye, already gave us an idea of what her rich alto could achieve – but she just pulls this off so well. Hyosung has blossomed into such a beautiful flower, and I love how every comeback reveals new colors and charms. Even Sunhwa’s vocals are solid! And Jieun…!
Ah, Song Jieun. The vocals, the hair, the emotion in her eyes… words fail me.
As girl groups go, Secret is probably one of the top three most well-rounded yet continually underrated girl groups in South Korea. Quality singers, great dancers, arguably the hardest work ethic of any South Korean girl group, especially when I think back to their ‘basement idol’ days. Yet under-appreciated, IMHO. When I was in Seoul last month, I couldn’t find a single store in Myeong Dong that sold their posters, cards, stickers, or other merchandise. (I was lucky to find the large “Poison” packaged CD in a MusicKorea store, because other stores didn’t carry it.) I really do hope the more mature sound of “Talk That,” so radically different from previous releases, changes many people’s perceptions of Secret, because this single is clearly one of their best. Shinsadong Tiger has outdone himself and matched a great song with a great group that could pull it off.
