Contemporary Christian pop-punk-rock band Relient K has released K Is For Karaoke, a seven-track EP that allows lead singer Matthew Thiessen and the rest of the gang to sink their teeth into some of pop music’s gems, including the #1 hits Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper and Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. Most netizens, however, seem to have taken issue with a polarizing track, #3, to be specific, a cover of Justin Bieber’s Baby.
Now, Relient K is an absolutely brilliant band, one of the greatest CCM artists of the last fifteen odd years, and they’re absolutely fantastic at what they set their minds to. Their cover of VeggieTales’ The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything may be the most spectacular cartoon cover that I’ve ever heard. Relient K doing Justin Bieber? Nice try, but it doesn’t work for me. It’s a straightforward, faithful cover, a little too by-the-numbers for my taste. But, hey, Mr. Bieber should be honored!
