Contemporary Christian singer/songwriter Jason Gray‘s I Am New is one of the hottest songs at Christian Inspo this week: it registers the highest number of radio adds, and the third-highest increase in airplay spins on Radio and Records. I’m not surprised at all; the buzz behind Jason Gray has been building for months, and after Centricity Records offered the indie stalwart an opportunity to broaden his market, well, I Am New, off Jason Gray’s Everything Sad is Coming Untrue, seems to have hit paydirt.
Gray is best known for his onstage humor, introspective lyrics, and technical artistry, but the man is more than just a voice and a guitar; his heart for the less fortunate has found him working on behalf of AIDS orphans as a World Vision artist. His active service of the poor has infused his life with meaning, and his main message, “a more-or-less permanent base camp somewhere between Christ’s sermon on the mount and Paul’s statement about boasting in our weaknesses.”
Jason Gray’s I Am New is anthemic and triumphant in its declaration of faith and joy in the redemption of self in Christ. I am firmly convinced more people should hear I Am New. What do y’all think?
I AM NEW Lyrics
Jason Gray
Now I won’t deny
The worst you could say about me
But I’m not defined by mistakes that I’ve made
Because God says of me
I am not who I was
I’m being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy and I’m dearly loved
I am new
Who I thought I was
And who I thought I had to be
I had to give them both up
Cause neither were willing
To ever believe
I am not who I was
I’m being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy and I’m dearly loved
I am new
I am new
Too long have I lived in the shadow of shame
Believing that there was no way I could change
But the one who is making everything new
Doesn’t see me the way that I do
He doesn’t see me the way that I do
I am not who I was
I’m being remade
I am new
I am chosen and holy and I’m dearly loved
I am new
I am new
Forgiven, beloved
Hidden in Christ
Made in the image of the Giver of Life
Righteous and holy, reborn and remade
Accepted and worthy
This is our new name
This is who we are now
