Contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Matt Maher is pure brilliance. My favorite Matt Maher song is Your Grace is Enough, and Hold Us Together was a delight, but his new single Christ is Risen, is lovely! I haven’t felt goosebumps like this since Audrey Assad’s Restless, which is still #1 on my personal chart after weeks and weeks of nonstop airplay. (Here’s a side story: Maher co-wrote Restless!)
The resurrection story forms an integral part of the core beliefs that we cling to in Christian faith. 1 Co4 15:20-26 tells us, But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
Matt Maher’s Christ is Risen is an encouraging paean to the love that motivated Jesus Christ to exchange His life for ours, and a heartfelt expression of praise in recognition of what He’s done. The bridge of Christ is Risen, in particular, is spine-tingling: “O death where is thy sting? O hell, where is your victory? The glory of God has defeated the night!” I LOVE IT. Churches across the world should sing Christ is Risen!
