In 1990, Chynna Phillips and sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson, better known as Wilson Phillips, burst onto the American music scene with Hold On, the carrier single of their self-titled debut album. Hold On was a crossover smash, becoming Billboard’s Hot 100 Single of the Year for 1990; the group’s next single, Release Me, also went to #1. After Impulsive hiccuped at #4, You’re In Love also went to #1, making Wilson Phillips the first – and so far, only – group to have three #1 hits from a debut CD.
Everyone who knew me during my teenage years knows I was crazy for Wilson Phillips. I lived and breathed their music, I knew the lyrics, I had posters, the works; all that was missing was an autograph and a concert experience, lol. Because of Wilson Phillips, I learned how to harmonize, and because of Wilson Phillips, I decided to write music. Twenty years later – my goodness! – I still “keep the candle burning” for the group, and continue to support their individual endeavors. I have every single CD they’ve released, every solo CD, every single.
I wonder why it took me so long to make an a capella cover of one of their songs. I guess I couldn’t decide which one, and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do it justice. So I decided to make a medley and well, it’s far from perfect – Wilson Phillips is one of the closest things to perfection in my eyes – but I hope listeners appreciate the heart that went into this. If ever Chynna, Carnie, or Wendy find their way to this humble blog, let me just say this: “I’ve loved you for twenty years, and you have made one of the biggest impacts on my life. Thank you for your music.”
