Newworldson, “Learning To Be The Light”

Canadian Contemporary Christian pop-rock band Newworldson has released Learning To Be The Light, its carrier single under new management and record label Platinum Pop Music. Joel Parisien (lead vocals, keys), Mark Rogers (drums), Rich Moore (bass), and Josh Toal (vocals, guitar) performed impressively with its 2007 debut, Salvation Station, with its carrier single Working Man, and exceeded expectations with 2010’s Newworldson, which yielded the band’s first hit single, There Is A Way. Learning To Be The Light has kicked off to a great start, debuting with a phenomenal 38 adds out of the box at Christian AC radio.

Newworldson’s Learning To Be The Light is the maiden release from Platinum Pop Music, the new record label formed by former Inpop Records president/co-founder Dale Bray. Bray’s passion for bringing Christian music for the thinking Christian has made him responsible for acts like Superchick and Abandon, both of whom have also been featured on GannsDeen.com. Under Platinum Pop, Newworldson receives the “artistic freedom to be the eclectic group that (they) truly are.”

Personally, I love Learning To Be The Light. It’s got that southern rock thang going on that really works for me, that Needtobreathe feel like Lay It Down or Washed By The Water, which were both radio hits. The lyrics are just a tad mmhm for me (best line: “I gave into a God I didn’t know | And now everything is falling into place | A brand new life is calling and I owe it all to grace”; worst line: “When a heart is cold as ice | You can melt it with advice
| No one wants to listen to,” just because I dislike the word “advice,” especially in a song), but then again, we can never have too many salt and light songs, right? I can totally hear Learning To Be The Light played on the radio or special numbers at local churches, especially along the Bible Belt, which is interesting because Newworldson hails from Canada (shout-out to downhere, another phenomenal Canadian Christian band). Ah well, the best things come oot of Canada, don’t they?

Ganns’ fearless prediction: Top 15 finish, Top 5 at best, Top 25 at worst

LEARNING TO BE THE LIGHT Lyrics
Newworldson

When the stars came crashing down in tiny pieces to the ground
I was all alone down here, trapped beneath the atmosphere
Then I thought somebody called my name
I spun around and caught a flame
I gave into a God I didn’t know
And now everything is falling into place
A brand new life is calling and I owe it all to grace

It’s so much brighter living in your world
Savior, what You did for me
You gave me something I want everyone to see
When we struggle and it all goes wrong
Only You can make it right
So I say
Oh
I’m learning to be the light

Whoa Whoa
I’m learning to be the light
Whoa whoa

When a heart is cold as ice
You can melt it with advice
No one wants to listen to
A list of things they shouldn’t do
So I build a city on a hill and I
light a candle on a sill
Knowing You’ll be always knocking on the door
And God I just want to love on everyone
All I have is Yours to give
So let the people come

It’s so much brighter living in your world
Savior, what You did for me
You gave me something I want everyone to see
When we struggle and it all goes wrong
Only You can make it right
So I say
Oh
I’m learning to be the light

Whoa Whoa
I’m learning to be the light
Whoa whoa

That makes the shadows hide
Th e light that breaks the curse of pride
The light that takes the weary in its arms

When it all came crashing down
There was only darkness all around
But in the distance I could see a flame

It’s so much brighter living in your world
Savior, what You did for me
You gave me something I want everyone, I mean everyone, to see
When we struggle and it all goes wrong
Only You can make it right
So I say
Oh
I’m learning to be the light

Whoa Whoa
I’m learning to be the light
Whoa whoa
