Barbie Almalbis, “Goodbye My Shadow”

Barbie Almalbis, “Goodbye My Shadow”

After a four-year hiatus to get married and have children, Philippine singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis, who is most popularly known for fronting the 90s OPM staple Barbie’s Cradle, has returned to the industry in a very big way. Barbie’s new single, Goodbye My Shadow, is a rousing pop-rock number with impassioned vocals, a mean guitar riff, and thoughtful lyrics that go deeper than one’s typical run-of-the-mill lyrical poetry.

Goodbye My Shadow is remarkable not just for its quality melody and instrumentation. Barbie Almalbis has decided to make the song available for download on her official website here. Taking a page from the Radiohead songbook, where the band’s latest album was made available for download, and fans were encouraged to make a payment of however much they felt the album was worth, Barbie encourages her fans to pay her how much they feel Goodbye My Shadow. (I intend to pay Php150, about half the price of a local CD, but well worth the cost of pioneering a new revolution in the way Philippine music is done.) If thousands of fans paid more than the typical price of a UK CD single to support Radiohead, I see no reason why we can’t eventually adapt to this )system if it benefits our artists and saves us the inconvenience of buying a CD for one popular song only.

GOODBYE MY SHADOW Lyrics
Barbie Almalbis

Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye
The door is now closed
From the fears and the lies

Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye
The door is now closed
From the fears and the lies

But I can’t carry you
Cuz it’s one at a time

Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye
There are no regrets
When it’s love who decides

I’m leaving you
I’m leaving you tonight
I’m going to
I’m going to the light

Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye my shadow
Goodbye my shadow
Hoo

I’m leaving you
I’m leaving you tonight
I’m going to
I’m going to the light

I’m leaving you
I’m leaving you tonight
I’m going to
I’m going to the light
