Here’s something I’d like to tell you about my marriage: my wife loves spicy food and I don’t. I now appreciate spicy food a lot more than before I was married, but I still have a pretty low tolerance for heat and am not too proud of it. Enter Chongqing Noodle House–or Maopo, as their Instagram account now declares–which serves some of the spiciest, most delicious Szechuan cuisine this side of Canberra.
My wife is absolutely nuts about their Signature Spicy Beef Noodle Soup; she chooses the minced beef instead of the standard beef strips. Wonderfully spicy and surprisingly complex, she doesn’t usually need to add additional spice powder because it’s flavourful enough on its own.
I usually go with their Wonton Soup or their Chicken Noodle Soup because I’m a lily-livered, chicken-hearted scaredy cat, although one time, we did try for the Sauteed Pickled Beans and Pork Mince Dry Noodle which was also delicious. Also worth mentioning is their Tofu Skin Salad, which is always a delight and surprisingly spicy.
If you’re a fan of Szechuan cuisine, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by Chongqing Street Noodle. There is a good selection of spicy and non-spicy options so there should be something for everyone.
