I’ve been hedging on the Christian Songs update because of the recent update in Billboard’s methodology for the Christian Songs chart. They’ve factored in streaming, iTunes sales, airplay, and a whole lot more. The end result is this: Hillsong United’s Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) has been number one on the chart for the past three weeks. Previous leader Mandisa’s Overcomer spent ten weeks at number one before giving way to Oceans. Meanwhile, songs can now easily jump into the Top 10 – I assume sales plays a huge role in this now – and we see the latest beneficiary of this rule is Owl City’s Christian tune, Light of Christmas, featuring tobyMac, which jumps 27-8.
Speaking of tobyMac, his own Speak Life is in the Top 10, alongside Light of Christmas and a unbilled appearance on Jamie Grace’s Beautiful Day, so that makes 3 songs in the Top 10 for the brilliant singer/rapper. Well-done, Mr. McKeehan.
