Contemporary Christian pop-rock act Needtobreathe has released the official video of Devil’s Been Talkin’, the latest radio single off their newest release, The Reckoning. Now I’m a sucker for any uptempo South Carolina-bred gospel jam, and Needtobreathe has mastered that old southern fried pop rock. Devil’s Been Talkin’ is just another fine example of how to tap into your roots and come up with a radio single that is both contemporary yet potentially timeless.
Slumber, Able, and Keep Your Eyes Open didn’t exactly set Christian radio on fire – the carrier peaked at a rather disappointing number 26 on the Christian rock chart – but Devil’s Been Talkin’ is a good bet to get Bear Reinhart and the rest of the gang back into radio’s good graces. With a rollicking banjo – is that a banjo?! – setting a firm ‘clap-yo-hands’ foundation in the background, a solid sing-along melody, a simple but interesting video, and, of course, Bear’s irresistible voice singing about the lies that the enemy foists upon us, Devil’s Been Talkin’ is my favorite single thus far from The Reckoning and a solid effort from a solid Christian band.
DEVIL’S BEEN TALKIN’
Needtobreathe
Bag of bones and blood red cheeks
Guilty from the words I speak
Say the truth will set you free
But it won’t for me
Cause I’m uneasy in my skin
Hangin on by a thread
Life it hasn’t left me yet
But I won’t forget
The devil’s been talkin
The ship is setting off to sea
But it’s sailing without me
I can’t help but feel I’m on
An island born to sink
The devil’s been talkin
We can’t change who we are
We are all alone
I’m running out
Of this hole alone
These fingers bled
Down to the bone
And I can’t move
This hell is cold
The chorus sings
This is home
The devil’s been talkin’
Bag of bones and blood red cheeks
Guilty from the words I speak
Say the truth will set you free
But it won’t for me
The devil’s been talkin’
