Contemporary Christian artist Andy Cherry has followed up his debut single Our God’s Alive with his take on the classic Christian hymn, Nothing But The Blood. Instead of bestowing expected piety on the famous Christian paean to the blood that grants mankind salvation, Cherry instead chooses to infuse it with southern pop-rock, throwing in some rollicking drum work and an original refrain of his own writing. Does it work? Yes and no. On one hand, I appreciate the newness of it, and I believe many in today’s generation will experience Nothing But the Blood in a new light, which is fantastic. On the other hand, the arrangement and vocals – at times sounding a bit like David Crowder, which is a compliment, in my opinion – may be a little too much too take for those used to the solemnness that they may have been used to in church. (And his enunciation on a few lines, like on naught of good that I have done, sound a bit off.) However, it is Cherry’s freedom to do this, and I applaud his decision to give Nothing But The Blood a different sound. Andy Cherry’s Nothing But the Blood is now picking up at Christian AC, which indicates his brave choice may be paying off.
