Kevin Max, “Take A Bow”

Kevin Max is best-known as a third of influential 90s Christian rock/rap group dctalk. Together with TobyMac, who is now one of Christian music’s most popular artists, and Michael Tait, who was also a successful solo artist in his own right and has recently discovered renewed success as lead singer of Newsboys, Max is responsible for some of the most popular songs of my youth, including the seminal Jesus Freak.

Max has returned with his latest project, the sprawling Fiefdom of Angels, an ambitious graphic novel and soundtrack on which one can find his cover of Muse’s Take A Bow. Written by Max in early 2011, Fiefdom of Angels concerns itself with the origins of the angelic race and the ultimate war in Heaven. The Fiefdom of Angels soundtrack features remakes of songs by Depeche Mode, Muse, and the Walker Brothers, among others, as well as some original material by Max, all designed to coincide with Fiefdom of Angels‘ characters and plot lines.

Max’s take on Take a Bow is both haunting and disturbing. Mostly strings and Max’s distinctively strong voice, the song is, in my opinion, not easy to listen to, but it plays an integral role in the novel’s development and plot, and even when taken out of context, is quite brilliant, really. The orchestral arrangement and Max’s powerful delivery take it over and beyond the original, in my opinion. Give it a listen and see if you agree.

TAKE A BOW Lyrics
Kevin Max

Corrupt
You’re corrupt
Bring corruption to all that you touch
Hold
You behold
And beholden for all that you’ve done
And spin
Cast a spell
Cast a spell on the country you run
And risk
You will risk
You will risk all their lives and their souls

And burn
You will burn
You will burn in hell, yeah you’ll burn in hell
You’ll burn in hell
Yeah you’ll burn in hell
For your sins

And our freedom’s consuming itself
What we’ve become
It’s contrary to what we want

Take a bow

Death
You bring death, and destruction to all that you touch
Pay
You must pay
You must pay for your crimes against the earth
Yeah hex
Feed the hex
Feed the hex on the country you love

Now beg
You will beg
You will beg for their lives and their souls

Now burn
You will burn
You will burn in hell, yeah you’ll burn in hell
You’ll burn in hell
Yeah you’ll burn in hell
You’ll burn in hell
Yeah you’ll burn in hell
For your sins
