John Mark McMillan, “Daylight”

Christian singer-songwriter John Mark McMillan, most well-known for writing the David Crowder Band Top 3 hit How He Loves, is now rising up Christian AC with Daylight, a track off his latest release, Economy. McMillan’s reputation for turning a phrase comes to full fruition with this track, featuring some of Contemporary Christian Music’s most introspective yet poetic lyrics. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, when it comes to writing evocative, poetic lyrics, McMillan and fellow songwriter Jimmy Needham are a cut above the rest.

I’ve embedded a video of McMillan singing Daylight live so you can also hear his heart and passion as he sings. That voice is also very distinctive, and it’s a real shame that McMillan has yet to score his own Top 10 hit on Christian AC. Who knows? Maybe that’ll change with Daylight.

DAYLIGHT Lyrics
John Mark McMillan

Daylight comes to meet you on the road
Like a prodigal son, a prodigal hope
That you gave up on when you were young
Yeah, but daylight is coming on

We live on the edge
On the edge of a darkness oh
We live on the edge
On the edge of a darkness oh
But daylight is coming on

Heaven bends low for the naked and the poor
To settle up a debt, to settle up the score
To set up a table on the edge of a war
Cause we’ve been bleeding on the edge of a sword

We live on the edge
On the edge of a darkness oh
We live on the edge
On the edge of a darkness oh
But daylight is coming on

The boardwalk is painted red with the blood
Of a thousand prospective heroes but one
Still cries out beyond all the grave and the flood
Where the blackest abysses cannot overcome

Cause we live on the edge
On the edge of a darkness oh
We live on the edge
On the edge of a darkness oh
But daylight is coming on
