Contemporary Christian pop-rock worship band Esterlyn has released a cover of Hillsong United’s Freedom is Here (VSR Label Music Group). Taken off the band’s new Call Out opus, Esterlyn’s take on Freedom is Here is every bit as delicious as the original, although – to be expected – we can’t wait to hear what it sounds live to make a total and complete call on whether we feel it trumps Joel Houston and company. Having said that, the accompanying video is also as young and vibrant, showing a cross section of humanity going through the rigors and expectations of life; Luke, Tommy, Shawn and Ryan deliver the kind of confidence expected of a band that knows its strength comes from the Lord, and celebrates in the joyous freedom He affords us. While mainstream Contemporary Christian stardom has thus far eluded Esterlyn, I’m confident that Freedom is Here may be the band’s ticket to getting their name and their message out there; touring with Kutless, Disciple, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Stellar Kart may increase their name recognition, but end of the day, the music speaks for itself, and I think Esterlyn’s Freedom is Here speaks – no, shouts! – volumes about the band’s talent.
