Matt Maher, “Turn Around”

Contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Matt Maher has gone for a decidedly rock-country feel with Turn Around, the carrier single of his new CD, The Love In Between, dropping across the United States and Maher’s native Canada sometime in fall 2011. Maher implements into fuller effect a sound that he experimented with on Hold Us Together, a 2010 hit off his Alive Again release. Maher’s third studio project is what he calls “blue collar gospel,” and we can certainly hear why. The sonic drive of the electric guitars, the somewhat twang-ier delivery of the words, and the Americana-inspired stories delivered in the verses of Turn Around seem almost written to speak to the meat-and-potatoes Christian of the American midwest. It is a sound not too far off from Southern Christian rock contemporaries like Third Day, and more recently Matthew West, and it should earn journeyman Maher, who is still best known for Your Grace Is Enough, now a mainstay in most churches, more fans across Canada’s southern border.

Maher, a practicing Catholic, promises a CD that will “take church from within the four walls to the handshake between two people. The Love In Between defines Matt as a singer, songwriter and worship leader. It is encouraging, hopeful, authentic; the articulation of who Matt is as a man, husband, father, brother and follower.”

Turn Around is now in the Top 40 of the Christian AC chart, and I imagine it will continue to rise to what I predict will be a Top 20 finish.

TURN AROUND Lyrics
Matt Maher

Young man on the side of the road
Lost and beat up with no where to go
Smells like a hangover from days ago
He does what he can to survive

Single mom with a dead end job
Ninety hour week just to keep what she’s got
With the bills that add up and down she’s caught
She does what she can to survive

Well, let me say
That love won’t take away the pain
But don’t be afraid
‘Cause it will never walk away

If you’re scared that you don’t matter
If you’re lost and need to be found
If you’re looking for a Savior
All you gotta do is turn around

Some turn to a bottle
Some turn to a drug
Some turn to another’s arms
But it seems like it’s never enough

Well I won’t say, that you will ever fail again
But there is grace
To wash away your every sin

If you’re scared that you don’t matter
If you’re lost and need to be found
If you’re looking for a Savior
All you gotta do is turn around

No one listens to you anymore
And your heart has broken down
You don’t need to move
Love has come to you
All you gotta do is turn around
All you gotta do is turn around
Turn around

You don’t have to take the broken road
You can turn around and come back home
You don’t have to take the broken road
You can turn around and come back home
You don’t have to take the broken road
You can turn around and come back home

If you’re scared that you don’t matter
If you’re lost and need to be found
If you’re looking for a Savior
All you gotta do is turn around

No one listens to you anymore
And your heart has broken down
You don’t need to move
Love has come to you
All you gotta do is turn around
All you gotta do is turn around
