Contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Bebo Norman has released God of My Everything, the second single off his stellar Ocean (BEC Recordings). Here Goes, the first single off Ocean, was a mid-charting track, which isn’t bad for this phenomenal Christian journeyman, but I think God of My Everything will perform better, especially on Christian AC and Soft AC/Inspo. Great Light of the World continues to remain my favorite Bebo Norman track, with Nothing Without You right behind it, and I would place God of My Everything a fighting fourth, because while God of My Everything is certainly anointed, and will speak to thousands – no, millions – of believers throughout the world, it lacks the anthemic power of Great Light of the World and the heart-tugging earnestness of Nothing Without You, in my humble opinion.
What I do like about Bebo Norman’s God of My Everything is how it is almost vertical in its worship. A lot of worship leaders – I among them – like their worship songs extremely vertical in its praise of God, directly singing of his attributes. However, some think “God of my everything,” “God of my need,” and so forth, is not actually God-centric but man-centric (God is the subject, but in context of the experience of man, God is being defined by man. I tend to disagree with that view, although it can be valid. How else can we define God save for our experience of Him? We can read about Him, we can hear about Him through others, but it is ultimately our experience of God that define how we view Him (loving God, saving God, healing God, righteously angry God, and so forth). Bebo Norman’s God of My Everything will speak to people because they will be able to relate to Bebo’s experience of God. We’ve all experienced pain. We’ve all experienced difficulty. We’ve all experienced redemption in one way or another. And that’s why I’m hoping Bebo Norman’s God of My Everything will be a bigger hit than his previous single, Here Goes, because people can and will benefit from that experience of and with God through this song.
GOD OF MY EVERYTHING Lyrics
Bebo Norman
Oh God of Heaven come and hem me in
Gather the pieces that are broken
Show me the wonder of You again
Oh God of Heaven
God of my hope, God of my need
God of my pain that no one else will ever see
God of my healing, God of my strength
God who has always and will forever reign
God of my everything
In all creation You call my name
In all the beauty that this world displays
Still I’m the one for who Your heart aches
In all creation
God of my hope, God of my need
God of my pain that no one else will ever see
God of my healing, God of my strength
God who has always and will forever reign
God of my everything
God of my everything
And when the mountains shake
You are my God
You never change
And when the earth gives way
You are still God
You never change
God of my hope, God of my need
God of my pain that no one else will ever see
God of my healing, God of my strength
God who has always and will forever reign
God of my everything
God of my everything
God of my everything
God of my everything
