Given the limited number of radio stations in the USA now playing Soft AC/Inspo – since everyone seems to be in love with Justin Bieber – 23 additional spins is a lot, so I’m hoping that You’re Not Alone will pick up in the next few weeks. The piano lines and driving chorus make it an ideal pick-me-up for American Christians this summer. It looks like downhere has another hit in its hands.

The Gettys’ 2009 CD, Awaken the Dawn, contains the single By Faith. For some reason, By Faith is really slow burning, and is now starting to rise up Radio and Records’ Soft AC/Inspo charts. This week, it’s the second most-added song at Inspo and registers the second-highest increase in airplay of all songs on Inspo radio this week. I don’t see why not: Kristyn’s beautiful voice underscores the message of the song, , and Keith’s rich, lush arrangement is truly moving. I can totally hear By Faith being sung at churches across the globe. Beautiful!

Nightlights‘s first single, the toe-tapper Yours to Take, is a little gem of a pop song, but Needham really shines on Grace Amazing, a raw rocker of a song that is now going for adds at CHR radio. (Yeah, Grace Amazing; this ain’t your grandma’s Amazing Grace.) Grace Amazing‘s lyrics speak very visually of what it means to be dead in sin and to be lifted up by love in grace. Rapper Trip Lee contributes some blazing-hot rap lyrics that just sizzle their way through Grace Amazing; between Lee and B. Reith, I think the future of Christian rap music is in interesting hands.

According to an interview on HearItFirst.com, for Restless, Audrey and co-writer Matt Maher holed themselves up in a room to collaborate on what they felt was an important passage out of St Augustine’s book, Confessions. The Catholic songwriters prayed over the line Our hearts are restless ’til they rest in you. Assad says something resonated within her as she meditated on it; specifically, how that “restlessness” seemed to speak to so many of today’s youth, who are caught up in the noise and hustle-bustle of today’s technological times. In the midst of all that restlessness, tangible relationships of both earthly and physical kind are watered down. Despite it all, we still “haven’t found what we’re looking for. I’m supposed to have everything I need in Christ and it feels like I haven’t gotten it.”

I’d agree with that. Audrey Assad’s Restless has a very solemn, almost ethereal quality to it that sets it apart from most other worship songs currently playing on CCM radio. It reminds me almost of Sarah McLachlan, although comparisons to Adie and Kristy Nockels seem more appropriate. I especially love how the vocal layers build up at the choruses (just Audrey Assad in the first chorus, then a second voice – Matt Maher’s? – in the second chorus, and the final chorus features full harmonies. It doesn’t sound “Catholic,” and Assad speaks about that here – and at the end of the day, theological differences aside, whatever music allows you to experience God to His fullest glory yet most intimate and personal, will be music that I will recommend. I definitely recommend Audrey Assad’s Restless.
