Sanctus Real, “Confidence”

Contemporary Christian pop/rock band Sanctus Real has returned with its new single, “Confidence,” featuring new lead singer Dustin Lolli, who replaces the now-solo-artist Matt Hammitt. Written by Lolli with Ethan Hulse, Matthew Armstrong, and Chris Rohman, “Confidence” is an explicitly biblical track on how God is the source of our strength and confidence, citing several heroes in the Bible who were known for accomplishing great feats, thanks to their God-given strength and faith.

Vocally, I think Lolli and Hammitt are as different as night and later that night. However, long-time fans of the band who understand Hammitt’s reasons for leaving may be comforted by the knowledge that he was replaced by a singer who can match Matt’s vocal chops and then some. I think “Confidence” is a fantastic track, and ushers in a remarkable new direction for the band’s new chapter.

CONFIDENCE Lyrics
Sanctus Real

I’m not a warrior
I’m too afraid to lose
I feel unqualified for what you’re calling me to
But Lord with your strength
I’ve got no excuse
Cause broken people are exactly who you use.

So give me faith like Daniel in the lion’s den
Give me hope like Moses in the wilderness
Give me a heart like David, Lord be my defense
So I can face my giants with confidence

You took a shepherd boy
And made him a King
So I’m gonna trust you and give you everything
I’ll be a conquerer
Cause you fight for me
I’ll be a champion claiming your victory

So give me faith like Daniel in the lion’s den
Give me hope like Moses in the wilderness
Give me a heart like David, Lord be my defense
So I can face my giants with confidence

I’m gonna sing and shout and shake the walls
I won’t stop until I see them fall
Gonna stand up, step out when you call
Jesus, Jesus
I’m gonna sing and shout and shake the walls
I won’t stop until I see them fall
Gonna stand up, step out when you call
Jesus

Give me faith like Daniel in the lion’s den
Give me hope like Moses in the wilderness
Give me a heart like David, Lord be my defense
So I can face my giants with confidence
Give me faith like Daniel in the lion’s den
Give me hope like Moses in the wilderness
Give me a heart like David, Lord be my defense
So I can face my giants with confidence
I’ll face my giants with confidence

MercyMe featuring John Reuben, “Grace Got You”

Contemporary Christian supergroup MercyMe has released easygoing chill track “Grace Got You” to Christian AC. Featuring Christian rapper John Reuben, “Grace Got You” has quite the pedigree, having been written by hitmakers Benjamin Glover and David Arthur Garcia with the band’s Bart Marshall Millard, rapper Reuben, and Solomon Olds, formerly of Family Force 5. Garcia and Glover have written for Mandisa before, so I’m familiar with this sonic landscape, and I LOVE IT. The encouraging message of the song will definitely resonate with many people, and I’m excited to see how this song will perform, especially in the wake of the brilliant yet criminally underappreciated “Happy Dance.”

Matthew West, “All In”

Contemporary Christian singer Matthew West has released his new single, All In. An inspiring song about how we throw ourselves full-faith into the destinies that God has for us, All In will speak life to many of us who are struggling with our faith in the face of trials. It’s a great anthemic song that should receive a great response not just from Christian AC, but from many believers out there who need a soundtrack for their latest undertakings.

David Dunn, “Masterpiece”

Contemporary Christian singer David Dunn has released his new single, “Masterpiece,” off his new album “Yellow Balloons.” The BEC Recordings artist collaborates with former Group 1 Crew frontman Manwell, adding an urban touch to Dunn’s new release. In the past, Dunn has displayed a remarkable openness to different sonic landscapes, and with “Masterpiece,” he adds another great piece to his impressive discography.

Matt Maher, “What a Friend”

Contemporary Chrsitian singer Matt Maher has released “What a Friend,” which is counter-intuitive to what I expected from that title! Expecting a hymn, I instead got a rollicking praise anthem–WHAT?! Yeah! “What a Friend,” penned by Maher with Adam Palmer, MAtthew Hein, and Abbie Parker, brings together what sounds like a Hammond B3, a gospel choir, and a frantic tempo for a home run single across the board. Great track from his new album, “Echoes.”

Josh Wilson, “Dream Small”

Contemporary Christian singer/songwriter Josh Wilson has released his new digital single, Dream Small.

First off, let me say that Wilson has had a phenomenal track record of singles, in my opinion, among them Savior Please, I Refuse, Before the Morning, Pushing Back the Dark, and That Was Then, This is Now.

With Dream Small, adds another fine track to his remarkable discography of delightful, thought-provoking Christian pop-rock music. Running counter-culture to what the world normally tells us today, which is to dream big and aim to make a giant impact, Wilson makes the case for how the otherwise normal and unremarkable actions of people still can make a huge impact for Christ.

How does one sell this message? In the case of Wilson, by packaging it with irresistible melodies, passionate vocals, and a chorus that won’t quit. Wilson has always come up with great uptempo guitar tracks–reference Pushing Back the Dark and That Was Then, This is Now for a taste, in case you have never experienced his music, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed–and Dream Small continues that fine tradition.

With Dream Small, Josh Wilson remains one of my favorite CCM artists of this generation. Well-done.
