Disciple, “Dear X (You Don’t Own Me)”

Disciple is the first heavy metal Christian band I’m ever going to feature on my New Christian Radio Singles feature, and for good reason. Dear X (You Don’t Own Me), the new single off Disciple’s new CD, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, out September 14 on INO, is vintage Disciple: loud, melodic, and kick-you-in-the-balls awesome! Dear X (You Don’t Own Me) starts off with a pretty terrific string section that kinda tells you, hold on, wait a minute, this is gonna be different. Then Kevin Young’s vocal comes in, and it’s all just that vocal, a kinda smooth vocal, but when the chorus kicks in, BOOM!! An unforgettable chorus that is guaranteed to get the folks in the mosh pit going, with the rough edges, the power-packed drums, the furious guitar…

WHEW!

And you can sing along, too. You can actually understand what Young sings, which apparently makes him different from a lot of other lead vocalists of other Christian heavy metal bands – Petra comes to mind, I’ll never forget buying one of their cassettes in 1992, and my jaw dropping when I realized what I had gotten myself into – and the passion comes through. Dear X (You Don’t Own Me), which actually speaks about the different vices and attitudes to which one bids goodbye when one has Jesus in one’s life, is raw power at its finest. You know what? This should be a Christian man’s music!! Seriously! I haven’t felt this pumped up in a while, and while I may not live the kind of lifestyle that these Christian rockers lead, I totally understand where they’re coming from when they sing about victory. That’s the kind of war cry that we need in the church, and more people – more men – need to hear songs like Dear X (You Don’t Own Me)!

Dear X (You Don’t Own Me) is the second most-added song at Christian rock radio. It’s actually the highest debut of the week at #24, and with an almost 70% increase in airplay from its previous week, I think Dear X (You Don’t Own Me) is a serious contender for #1 in a couple of months. Watch for it!

DEAR X (YOU DON’T OWN ME Lyrics
Disciple

Dear pain, oh, it’s been a long time
Remember when you were holding me tight
I would stay awake with you all night
Dear shame, I was safe in your arms
You were there when it all fell apart
I would get so lost in your beautiful lies
I let you go
But you’re still chasing

Go ahead
You’re never gonna take me
You can bend
But you’re never gonna break me
I was yours
I’m not yours anymore
Oh, you don’t own me

Dear hate, I know you’re not far
You would wait at the door of my heart
I was amazed at the passion in your cries
Dear anger, you made me so high
You were faithful to show up on time
Such a flame that was burning in your eyes
I let you go
But you’re still chasing

Go ahead
You’re never gonna take me
You can bend
But you’re never gonna break me
I was yours
But I’m not yours anymore
Oh, you don’t own me

Go ahead
Put a target on my forehead
You can fire
But you’ve got no bullet
I was yours
But I’m not yours anymore
Oh, you don’t own me

You tempted me to look back

But everything that we had together was a lie

Go ahead
You’re never gonna take me
You can bend
But you’re never gonna break me
I was yours
But I’m not yours anymore
Oh, you don’t own me

Go ahead
Put a target on my forehead
You can fire
But you’ve got no bullet
I was yours
But I’m not yours anymore
Oh, you don’t own me

Go ahead
Put a target on my forehead
You can fire
But you’ve got no bullet
I was yours
But I’m not yours anymore
Oh, you don’t own me
