Josh Wilson’s “Before the Morning” inspires

Contemporary Christian singer/songwriter Josh Wilson first appeared on my radar screen with Savior Please, a moving track from his major label debut, Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup, that peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart. A little less than two years later, his sophomore CD, Life is Not a Snapshot, has birthed Before the Morning, a slow burn that has risen up the charts and is now in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart, peaking thus far at #3, no small feat considering that MercyMe has a chokehold at #1 with All of Creation. (Seriously, who else can top MercyMe? Maybe Casting Crowns or tobyMAC. But few others.)

Wilson’s Savior Please had an anthemic quality to it that manifests itself similarly in Before The Morning. The second single off Life is Not a Snapshot (the first single, Sing, languished in the lower 40s of the Christian chart; praise God that He is a God of second chances), Before the Morning is now Wilson’s biggest hit to date, and deservedly so. Anyone who’s ever been in the valleys will appreciate this encouraging song of where our hearts have to be in the dark, before the light comes.

BEFORE THE MORNING Lyrics
Josh Wilson

Do you wonder why you have to
Feel the things that hurt you
If there’s a God who loves you where is He now

Maybe there are things you can’t see
And all those things are happening
To bring a better ending

Someday somehow you’ll see you’ll see

Would you dare would you dare to believe
That you still have a reason to sing
Cause the pain that you’ve been feeling
It can’t compare to the joy that’s coming
So hold on you gotta wait for the light
Press on and just fight the good fight
Cause the pain that you’ve been feeling
It’s just the dark before the morning

My friend you know how this all ends
You know where you’re going
You just don’t know how you’ll get there
So say a prayer

And hold on cause there’s good for those who love God
But life is not a snapshot
It might take a little time but you’ll see the bigger picture

Once you feel the weight of glory
All your pain will fade to memory

It’s just the hurt before the healing
Oh the pain that you’ve been feeling
It’s just the dark before the morning
