    Hi Ganns,

I think I like the song too

I’m just wondering why you are quite familiar with “non-christian” songs.

I am in the world, not of it, Mikes. ;)

I’ve followed Billboard Magazine’s charts since I was 12. Every Friday, Billboard updates its charts. I see the songs rising up, and I visit the artist’s MySpace or check YouTube.

My charts are usually predominantly Christian, but after RadioandRecords.com went offline, it’s been difficult to track the newer Christian songs released. Turnover on the Billboard Christian charts is quite slow; America holds onto its favorite songs and artists for long periods of time, so it can take weeks before a new song enters the Top 20. It’s even sadder because a lot of the new songs are by the same artists. It’s hard for a new Christian artist to break through in the US.

For me, it’s important to track what’s current because there is always potential to use these as musical pegs for my originals.

I’m sold out with not of this world. But I’m concerned with what others would think. what message does this bring from you the filipino christian blogger.

    I honestly don’t think it’s a problem, Mikes.

Let’s talk about the “Kelly is HOT” part first. If it’s an issue of misunderstanding where I am coming from, I think the phrase ‘tongue-in-cheek’ says it best. Obviously, Eliza Dushku and I were never together. Obviously, I don’t “love” her. Neither do I “love” Kelly Rowland; it’s an appreciation, really, and honoring, of her beauty and her talent. Previous posts on When Love Takes Over show I appreciate the song. Even before this video appeared, I was in full appreciation of the quality of the song. It’s a great song. I don’t think people are going to think I’m going to leave Cathy to run off to the USA and search for Ms Rowland.

Let me state for the record: There is no lust in my heart for Kelly Rowland.

Now let’s talk about the song. I am not the type of Christian who shuts himself off from secular music; some Christians are, and I don’t judge them for that. Like I said in the previous post, there is merit in listening to contemporary music because it affords a person the opportunity to place a finger on the pulse of popular culture. If we are to make inroads into reaching out to others, we need to learn how to speak their language. According to 3 Colors of Ministry, music is my primary spiritual gifting, and I realize that it is important the music I make appeals to a broader section of the people who attend the church I attend.

That’s why I listen to Metro Station. And Kelly Clarkson. And Daughtry. And Miley Cyrus. My iPod is the strangest little thing you ever will see. I do draw the line at songs that clearly sing of things that are against God’s Word, though. (I listened to Obsessed, for instance, and wrote my thoughts on the Mariah-Eminem controversy, but I probably will never listen to it again; the song just doesn’t appeal to me on both lyrical and musical standpoints.)

Furthermore, while I know Christian music has its own versions of virtually everything under the sun (Christian rock, Christian hiphop, Christian reggae, etc.), I do not have the time nor energy to search these songs and artists out. Billboard (and formerly RadioandRecords before it was absorbed by Billboard) is my primary source for new and upcoming music by a variety of artists in the Christian genre, but it’s too limited to give me the full range of songs I need to satisfy my urge for new music. We also do not have a devoted Christian video music channel, but I’ve subscribed to some of my Christian artists’ YouTube accounts to keep me updated and posted.

I don’t think I am dishonoring God with the music I listen to, although some people may disagree, as is their right. (I don’t judge Jordin Sparks, the Jonas Brothers, and a slew of other artists for doing the music they’re doing, either.) People will think what they want to think. (Remember my “gay” post?) I don’t believe people – at least people who know me – will change their impression of me based on a post that celebrates the beauty of a woman and the quality of a song. If they do, well, that’s their business. God knows me enough to know my heart and everything in it still belongs to Him.

    Be superblessed, Mikes.

    Hi ganns

I completely understand where you’re coming from. the lust thing is just so far off.

let me clear my point: I still respect you in fact I think I’m proud of your a Christian blogger as I am. I also think that you draw people to God through your blog as well and I think that’s the greatest thing a blogger can do.

I respect your choices for music. I was just concerned (brotherly) but really don’t take me wrong i like these songs as well. i like Katy Perry’s Thinking Of you, Miley’s the climb and all other stuff. I’m into music as well (but not a singer), let’s just try not to be driven by the meanings and lyrics of the songs and instead be filled with God’s word and all Godly things which truly helps us in our spiritual journey with Him.

I appreciate your concern. I can assure you that melody is my primary reason for paying attention to secular music, and I can also assure you that, with God’s grace and help, I strive constantly to maintain the balance of remaining faithful to my God while accomplishing what Paul attempted to accomplish in 1 Cor 9:22.
