Chris Sligh, Season Six finalist on American Idol, is a worship leader and first-class vocalist. One of the top 12 finalists on American Idol’s Season Six, Sligh was popular for his curly hair and positive demeanor. The son of conservative missionaries, Sligh grew up listening to very solid Christian music - hardly ever any drums in the songs he heard growing up - but found his own sound as he pursued higher education. Empty Me, the carrier single off his debut album Running Back to You, is now rising quickly up Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart. Empty Me, a song of returning to God and asking Him for more of Him and less of oneself, is a surefire crossover hit across many Christian formats; I predict a Top 10 finish for Chris Sligh’s Empty Me on Christian AC, possibly Top 20 on Inspo, and possible Top 20 on Christian CHR. Expect Chris Sligh to impact CCM radio as much as American Idol Season Five predecessor Mandisa Hundley.

Lyrics to Chris Sligh’s Empty Me after the jump

I’ve had just enough of the spotlight when it burns bright
To see how it gets in the blood.
And I’ve tasted my share of the sweet life and the wild ride
And found a little is not quite enough.
I know how I can stray
And how fast my heart could change.

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.

I’ve seen just enough of the quick buys of the best lies
To know how prodigals can be drawn away.
I know how I can stray
And how fast my heart could change.

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.

Cause everything is a lesser thing
Compared to you, compared to you.
Cause everything is a lesser thing
Compared to you so I surrender all

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.
Oh, filled with you.
Empty me.

I love this song. However, I think this part of the song, “Compared to you so why surrender all?” is supposed to be, “Compared to you, so I surrender all.” Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what it seems like to me. Also, I don’t think the lyrics should be asking, “why surrender all?” when the basis of the song is about him wanting all of himself to be emptied, so he can be filled with the Lord.

You’re right, Becky. That makes more sense. I’ll edit accordingly. Thanks!
