A book, a bib, a bruise, and baby names

A book. I started on a new book last night. Titled How to Be a Man of Character in a World of Compromise, this devotional book from Richard Exley details how godly men can build for themselves a solid foundation of character and integrity. It takes its lessons from the Bible’s book of Proverbs.

I am looking forward to learning a lot, especially in light of last week’s Blog Parteeh. I don’t think I made the best impression.

A bib. I uploaded a new design onto FaithFactor. It’s a bib featuring FaithFactor’s resident cartoon sheep. The text reads, “I am the sheep and Jesus Christ is my shepherd.” If you’d like to purchase one, it retails for only US$8.00. Support Christian designers!

A bruise. Cathy sprained her foot early yesterday. Combine that with all the nausea and dizziness, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for two stay-at-home parents. Nathan spent the entire day in front of my desktop, playing on Orisinal.

Baby Names. Meanwhile, Baby Deen #2 has started to kick. Cathy finds it a bit discomfiting, but this baby seems to be a fighter. In about two months, we’ll go for that ultrasound and find out if Nathan’s sibling is going to be a boy or a girl. We’ve TONS of potential baby names, especially since we’re hedging on the original names we came up with. My shortlist, which Cathy has neither seen nor approved, includes:

  • BOYS
    • Nicklaus. The strongest contender for a boy’s name, since it’s similar to my Dad’s name, Nicholas, and is English for “victorious.”
    • Noah. I like going with a Biblical name. It’s Hebrew for “rest.”
    • Nolan. It’s Gaelic for “famous.” When I hear Nolan, I see a well-adjusted, good-looking guy. What do you see?
  • GIRLS
    • Caitlin. Cathy’s always loved this name. It’s Irish for “pure soul.”
    • Catharine. I like this because it’s a variation of Cathy’s name. English for “pure.”
    • Charlize. Nothing to do with Ms. Theron, but it is a pretty name that means “beautiful star” in South African.
    • Nichol, Nicole, Nichole, or Nicolle. “Victorious” in English. Female version of Nicholas, really, again, paying tribute to my father.
    • And finally, my dark horse for a girl’s name starting with “N”: Nitika. It’s Indian for “angel.” It’s so left of center, but I find it such a beautiful name. Her nickname can be Nikki, which still is an homage to my dad. Cathy would never approve, though.

What do you think? Any baby name suggestions, preferably starting with N or C?

hehe! you’ve expanded to another letter of the alphabet. goodie. hehe!

but but you have not considered norma jean deen? or even natalie jean deen? but but but… that’s so socially suicidal that it’s almost cool. hehehe!

anyway… votes up for nolan and nitika. just because i like weird names. nitika might need a lot of kwento before people get what it’s supposed to be.

i lay claim to ulan. hahaha!

  2. Leigh January 30th, 2007 10:10 am

    Noah is nice. Simple. Classy.

As for girl names, I like Chloe. But, apparently it’s Greek for “green shoot”, whatever that means. I do have a friend named Chloe and she’s an accomplished musician, if that counts for anything. :)

  3. Leigh January 30th, 2007 10:13 am

how about nikita like the La Femme Nikita?

Nikita is Indian for “perfect”. now isn’t that perfect?

  4. ganns January 30th, 2007 10:14 am

Leigh: Chloe was in my short list, too! It can also mean ‘young’ or ‘blooming.’

Anj: Jean is still part of the equation. :) It’s Jean Deen, no matter what happens. Hahahaha.

And, oh, before I forget… ULAN?

  5. ganns January 30th, 2007 10:15 am

But… but… no one is perfect.

    Hahahaha!

Sige, will add that to the short list. Like Cathy will approve. *sigh*

  6. Tina January 30th, 2007 11:05 am

I like Caitlin. It’s simple. I can imagine a sweet and demure girl. =)

Noah’s good too. I seem to be going for simple names lately. Hmm.

  7. Joni January 30th, 2007 12:52 pm

I love “Caitlin” and “Nicolle”. :)
    Other suggestions:
    C –> Camille, Chantal (”a song”), Colleen
N –> Nina, Niña, Nadine (”hope”)

They’re all girls’ names, I know. Sana girl naman! hehehe!

  8. ganns January 30th, 2007 1:04 pm

Nadine Deen?? I’m not sure, Joni! LOL

Cathy won’t go with Camille, trust me. Nina and Niña were already discussed and vetoed. There’s a Colleen in our family already.

Chantal might work; that’s a pretty name, and not too many girls have it.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Joni!

  9. Shari January 30th, 2007 1:59 pm

I love Nolan and Caitlin. Geesh, Ganns, I’m not so sure about Nitika. Your *future daughter* might spank you when she’s already a big girl. Pwede bang Nikita na lang? ;)
Teka, I’m not much of a Christian, but I do know some Biblical names (friends have been asking, because they’ve all been getting pregnant hehe). Not sure about the meaning though.

Caleb, Nathan/Nathaneal (tempted to say Charles & Claude Deen hehe)

Charity, Chloe, Naomi (or Naome? *winks*), Courtney, Nadia

Shucks. Imported ata mga names na yan. ^_^

  10. ganns January 30th, 2007 2:11 pm

    Thanks for those, Shari!

Boys: Nathan is my firstborn. :) Caleb is not an option. ;)
Girls: I’m not a fan of either Naomi, Courtney, or Charity. I suggested Nadia, and Cathy quickly vetoed it. Chloe was already suggested earlier, and it’s lovely. I’ll give it a shot.

  11. benj January 30th, 2007 4:57 pm

    Boys: Cain, Curtis, Nikolai

    Girl: Nicola

Nolan sounds really wrong - almost as wrong as ROLAND or CONRAD.

  12. ganns January 30th, 2007 6:18 pm

    Cain? Nuh-uh.

    Curtis? Not after “Dreamgirls.”

    Nikolai or Nicola could work.

    Well, I like Nolan.

Thanks for those suggestions, Benj. :)

  13. Tina January 30th, 2007 9:58 pm

Oh yeah, I just remembered this one name I always used in my stories: Chandra. It means shining like the stars…or something like that. :D

  14. Joni January 30th, 2007 10:05 pm

Nikolai?? First thing comes to mind: the Anti-christ character, Nicolae Carpathia, in the Left Behind book series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins.

Veto!!! (hahaha, as if I have the right to veto :P)

    Nicholas na lang. hehe..

I have a god-daughter named Chantal. Her dad’s the music director of my home church and he really loved that name… which means “a song”. Wala lang. Favorite god-daughter ko kse yun. Such a cute baby! hahaha! off-topic na ‘to. :P

  15. benj January 30th, 2007 10:11 pm

Cain is a great name! :) It’s one of the few good names from the bible - the other one being Benjamin of course! haha

Here are the names of some of my classmates, try them on for size. haha

Rambo - Yes, Rambo is his real name. That’s not just a nickname!
Rodeohon - ummm… words escape me.
    Venjune - ah… ditto

  16. ganns January 31st, 2007 3:05 am

I like Benjamin; Cathy does not.

    As for the rest of your suggestions… um… they’re very non-conventional! :D
Joni: I like Chantal. Let’s see what Cathy has to say about that.

Tina: Chandra! Like the tennis player Chandra Rubin. Hm. It could work!… But then again, Chandra also sounds like ‘tundra,’ and I’m not sure if my daughter would appreciate sounding like a swampy marsh.

ang saya naman ng mga comments. hehe! and very nice names too. i especially enjoy claude. weeheheeee!

if ever i have children, i’d like to name them filipino names, ulan being one of them. but it could change. thus, for now, i lay claim to ulan. hehe!

anyway… in the end, when you get your ultrasound and see your baby’s picture, i think the perfect name would just come. :) and what really matters, whatever his/her name would be, is how you raise them to be beautiful children who love God.

    good luck ganns! (and cathy).

  18. Vida January 31st, 2007 10:01 am

I’m sure you guys will choose the perfect name for your child, but here are some more options (sorry kung may madodoble):

Naomi, Natalie, Natasha, Nala, Noreen, Nora(h), Nina, Nelle, Nadine
Charlotte, Charmaine, Cherie, Celest(e), Celine, Corrine, Carol, Christine, Carmen

[I like Nicholas and its variants]
    Carlos, Carlo, Charles, Christopher

    Take care and God bless.

  19. ganns January 31st, 2007 10:01 am

I pray you have kids the minute you get married, anj. :D
    Claude Deen? Please! Where’s Reymart?!

  20. benj January 31st, 2007 5:07 pm

    how about Chrysanthus? hahaha.

  21. ganns February 1st, 2007 4:34 am

    How about Ssssssh! ;)
